Doug Symes, a self-taught woodworker, creates unique keepsake boxes, urns, jewelry boxes, occasional tables, wall shelves and coat hooks, along with a beautiful line of carved and live edge necklaces. Doug implements traditional techniques in his construction. The unusual grain patterns of wood in its rawest form are the inspiration that motivates him. Attention to detail is evident and showcases his wood artistry and high quality.
Utilizing colour is an important part of the process in much of his work. Beautiful, water based wood stain is often incorporated into the overall design, after which comes time spent on sanding to a velvet smooth finish. The final stage is protection. Doug likes to finish with different applications such as lacquer, bees wax, water based varnish and then hand polishing.
Doug works in his studio on the outskirts of Orillia, Ontario and welcomes custom orders. He is open by appointment. Apart from participation in juried shows, galleries and gift shops, you can view and purchase Doug’s woodworking online.
